Project Name: Ystagua Water Main Break
Date: December 1998 to July1999
Report Title: Cultural Resources Monitoring Report
for the Village of Ystagua Water
Main Break, City of San Diego, California
Authors: Nina Harris, Tracy Stropes and Dennis
Gallegos
Project Description:
This study
provides the results of archaeological monitoring as requested by
City of San Diego for the water main break in the north portion
of a vacant lot. The purpose of the study was to monitor tree removal
and excavation of a trench for repair of a pipeline within the boundary
of previously recorded Village of Ystagua, and to identify and collect
any cultural material that might be encountered. Monitoring and
collections during tree removal, excavation, repairs and backfilling
was conducted from December-January. All archaeological monitoring
followed City of San Diego and CEQA guidelines and a Native American
monitor was present during all field work.
The repair of the pipeline using a backhoe provided an opportunity
for viewing sidewall profiles, as well as inspecting stockpiled
soil next to the trench for cultural materials. Given the cultural
material on the surface caused by the high volume of water flowing
from the broken pipeline, surface collection of artifacts and bone
was necessary. Cultural materials collected included 2,872 artifacts
and 227 g of bone. The range of artifacts included arrow points,
beads, pendants, cores, drills, manos, worked shell, ceramics, and
debitage. Human bone was identified, collected and reburied. The
Native American Monitors were Clarence Brown and Anita Rodriguez.
Special studies completed included obsidian hydration and sourcing,
and protein residue analysis.
Special Problems/Project Schedule/Time Control/Agency Satisfaction:
No problems were encountered during fieldwork and report writing
preparation and review. All work by Gallegos & Associates was
completed within schedule.
Project Costs: The cost to complete the monitoring and surface collection
was $11,600.00. Additional cost of $5,370.00 was requested for artifact
cataloguing, special studies, analysis, report preparation and illustrations.
